Why we flag movements in red — and what it means for your treatment plan
Limits are not just restrictions in a digital treatment plan.
They help define the difference between a movement that looks possible in a setup and a movement that can be predictably achieved in clinical practice.
At 3D Predict, we use tooth movement limits as a clinical safety tool. They are based on more than 10 years of hands-on experience in aligner therapy.
One recent case illustrates this well: a 6 mm mesialization was requested without any additional appliances. We advised that this movement would be highly unpredictable and would likely result not in bodily movement, but in mesial tipping of the crown.
Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened. After around 1.5 years of treatment, the roots remained almost in the same position, the crown tipped mesially, and the space needed for an implant could not be created.
That is why, in every 3D Predict PDF treatment report, movements that exceed the recommended limits are automatically highlighted in red. This helps the doctor see early on where the plan goes beyond the predictable range.
Limits are not there to hold treatment back. They help make the plan more realistic, safer, and clinically achievable.
